BJP Alleges Police Interference as Women Headed to PM Modi's Rally in West Bengal Face Obstacles

In a dramatic turn of events, a convoy of buses carrying women from Sandeshkhali to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Barasat, West Bengal, was met with unexpected hurdles as they made their way to the venue on Wednesday. BJP leaders raised allegations of police interference, claiming that the buses were repeatedly stopped at various checkpoints under the guise of "security protocol."

The state BJP had organized the transportation of women, who allegedly faced harassment at the hands of suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates, to the rally venue located approximately 80 km away. However, their journey was marred by delays and disruptions as police intervention hindered their progress.

According to accounts from BJP leaders onboard the buses, the convoy was first halted at the Biswa Bangla Gate in New Town, and then again at Airport Gate 1 en route to Barasat, purportedly due to "security protocol." Meanwhile, other vehicles continued unhindered, sparking accusations of intentional obstruction aimed at preventing the attendees from reaching the rally on time.

Tensions escalated as approximately 30 individuals disembarked from two of the buses that were detained, raising slogans against the ruling TMC government. Their impassioned protest highlighted the simmering discontent and political friction underlying the situation.

In response to the allegations, the police defended their actions, attributing the restrictions on traffic movement to "security protocol" necessitated by the Prime Minister's imminent travel along the same route. A police spokesperson clarified that the convoy coincided with the PM's convoy, leading to regulated movement as a precautionary measure to ensure security.

Once the Prime Minister's convoy had passed through the area, the buses were reportedly permitted to resume their journey, albeit after experiencing significant delays and disruptions. The episode underscored the delicate balance between maintaining public safety and facilitating political gatherings in the charged atmosphere of election season.

As tensions simmered and accusations flew, the incident served as a microcosm of the broader political landscape in West Bengal, where competing parties vie for influence and support ahead of the crucial elections.
